Building Spaces of True Inclusion: Autism Spectrum Disorder Sensory Room

Amal is driven to creating environments where differences are celebrated and accessibility is woven into everyday practice. In partnership with the Miriam Foundation, Amal has created a sensory room at the Gold Learning and Research Centre – an environment designed specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Thoughtfully arranged lights, textures, sounds, and gentle vibrations offer a calming space that supports focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. This room gives children the comfort and sensory balance they need to engage, learn, and thrive.

Empowering Future Leaders in Inclusive Education: The Amal Foundation Scholarship

In 2018, Amal launched its very first scholarship program to uplift exceptional students dedicated to transforming the lives of children with disabilities. Each year, this scholarship honors aspiring leaders who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, a strong capacity to lead, and a deep commitment to inclusive, community-based education.

In partnership with Concordia University, the program supports students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Child Studies, specializing in Exceptionality and Diversity in Childhood Settings. Through this initiative, Amal helps empower the next generation of educators and advocates who strive to ensure that all children with disabilities can live life to the fullest in an inclusive world.

The Blindfold that Opened Eyes: “UNION”

Advocacy is at the heart of our mission, ensuring that children with disabilities are seen, understood, and championed. One of our most powerful awareness efforts emerged from a bold idea: running a half-marathon blindfolded to advocate for para-athletes and children with visual impairments. With every step taken in darkness, our team invited the world to experience, even briefly, the realities many visually impaired children navigate each day. More than a fundraiser, it was a collective statement of courage, empathy, and togetherness. Shortly after, UNION” was born, an annual sporting event that brings communities together to stand beside all para-athletes, and to amplify their voices and stories.

Strength Through Splash: Hydrotherapy Program

Children come to Amal seeking an environment where their abilities can shine. Amal has proudly supported the Hydrotherapy Program at the Lethbridge-Leyton-Mackay Rehabilitation Center – one of the few places where children who spend much of their day fighting gravity can move freely and without restraint. In the water, they experience independence, joy, and a sense of possibility that is often hard to access on land. Hydrotherapy strengthens bodies, but just as importantly, it nurtures confidence, connection, and the freedom to simply be a child.

Seeing the World Through Music: Hanyu’s Piano Lessons

Our work is filled with breakthrough moments that reshape the lives of children with disabilities. For Hanyu, who was bravely navigating retinal cancer, music became her window to the world. As her vision faded, her love for sound only grew stronger. Through Amal’s support, Hanyu received her first piano and her very first lesson – an experience that instantly lit up both her life and her mother’s. What began as a single moment of joy soon blossomed into a shared family journey. With each new lesson, their home filled with confidence, connection, and melodies that brought comfort and hope.

Igniting Early Potential: Paprika Program

Amal championed Centre Philou’s Paprika Program, a multidisciplinary early-stimulation initiative for children with multiple disabilities, aged 0 to 5. The program gives these young children a chance to experience breakthroughs that might otherwise feel out of reach, through:

  • Motor development support to strengthen their coordination, mobility, and independence.
  • Sensory stimulation to encourage curiosity, comfort, and new forms of engagement with the world around them.
  • Cognitive development activities that nurture early learning, communication, and emotional connection.

For children with disabilities, these early years are foundational. The impact extends far beyond the child. Families gain guidance, reassurance, and relief in knowing their little ones are receiving compassionate, specialized care. Parents are supported, encouraged, and given room to breathe, so they can show up for their children with renewed strength.
